Waste Heat Boiler

A finite element steady state heat transfer and stress analysis of a waste heat boiler was performed.  The boiler was analyzed and the results compared to the ASME Section VIII Division 2 criteria (2000 Edition) for stress.  The loads analyzed were design internal pressure, reaction chamber load, and steady state thermal loads corresponding to normal operation.  Results of the analysis predict that the vessel conforms to the allowable limits for stress according to criteria set forth in Mandatory Appendix 4 of Section VIII, Division 2 of the Code.

The finite element mesh and stress intensity for one of the load cases is shown below. All of the predicted stresses indicated the boiler met the criteria of ASME Section VIII, Division 2 Mandatory Appendix 4, using allowable stress values from Division 1.
